[Eighth: His Methodology in His Book]

The Hafiz divided the Book of Biographies into thirty-five layers across fourteen volumes, and did not follow a uniform sequence. The thirty-third layer extends from the year 618 AH, marking the death of Ibn Rajah al-Juma'ili al-Hanbali, to the year 635 AH, the year of the death of Makram ibn Muhammad ibn Hamza ibn Abi al-Saqr.

This layer encompasses seventeen years.

As for the thirty-fourth layer, it began in the year 636 AH, the year of the death of Abu al-Fadl Ja'far ibn Ali al-Hamdani, and ended in 652 AH, the year of the death of Ibn Allan al-Qays al-Dimashqi. This layer spans sixteen years.

The thirty-fifth layer began in the year 653 AH, the year of the death of Ismail ibn Hamid al-Qusi, continuing until 739 AH, marking when the Hafiz al-Dhahabi witnessed Qilij Khan, the son of al-Mu'izz, at the court of Judge al-Qudah Taqi al-Din al-Subki. This layer extends to cover eighty-six years.
